The Social Welfare Board is a vital link to the health care delivery system in the Buchanan County area. The clinic has helped keep the uninsured healthy since 1913.
The Social Welfare Board of Buchanan County (SWB) is a not for profit health care clinic that provides free medical and dental care to uninsured residents who live in Buchanan County at or below 100% federal poverty level and do not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare, or Veteran's Benefits. The medical clinic was established in 1913 by Missouri State Statute 205.770 and is based on the idea that the community would take care of the medically indigent, a unique provision being that physicians would provide services at no cost to the patients or sponsoring body. The Social Welfare Clinic is the oldest free clinic in the United States. A six member board of directors appointed by City and County officials monitors.
